Hi, I'm Elizabeth — or Liz. I did the pivot. The one from Friends minus the couch and the actors. Eighteen years a teacher, then a pandemic, and suddenly I knew a lot more about myself — including the parts of teaching I loved most: curriculum, design, and the relationships. Shuffle ball change!
Turns out adult learning has its own research, methods, and acronyms. I spent over a year learning all of it while working a stack of part-time jobs: refinishing furniture for my small business, tutoring, packing popcorn, and walking the neighborhood's dogs. (Master's in Reading Education — apparently a stranger qualification for electrical code than you'd think.)
Then, BAM! I'm an instructional designer at a construction school, building licensing courses for tradespeople in all 50 states. And now, I'm looking for what's next.
I listen to the issues and solve the problems. What is the end goal? What do you want people to do that they are not doing? It could be training, but it might not be. My work is to partner with the SMEs and stakeholders to create solutions.
All training should be centered around the learner. What do they need to learn or achieve? What is the data showing? Using a needs assessment, speaking to Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and considering the different specific learning goals for a group of learners is integral.
